School of Dual Language Translation
Your website appears to only be in Spanish. Where is the “translate button”?
Much of the website is available in both languages, however, buttons and headers are only provided in Spanish. Unlike many sites on the Internet, you will not find a “translate this page” button on the website for the Hawthorn School of Dual Language. This choice has been made for several philosophical reasons.
- Usually the “translate” buttons on web pages utilize web-based translators that do not provide a quality translation.
- Our Dual Language program is not a translation model. When our teachers use English and Spanish in the classroom, they teach using the same concepts, big ideas, and themes so learning connects throughout the day and across languages. However, teachers do not translate for the students, as translation is not an effective way to learn a language.
- Everyone who has chosen the Hawthorn School of Dual Language for their children have made a commitment to the Spanish Language. In order to show our value of the Spanish language, we have used Spanish on our website.
So, if I only speak English, how do I know what the site says?
We are hoping that you will use some of the same strategies that your children use in the classroom.
Cognates: This website utilizes many cognates in order to communicate. Cognates are words that look the same in English and Spanish.
Visual Cues: In places where we could not use a cognate, we have provided a picture to help you.
Native Language: When you click on the Spanish header, you will find more in depth information in both English and Spanish.
